LINGAYEN– The fishery industry in this town is also suffering from the ill effects of El Niño.

According to Lingayen Federation of Fisherfolk Organizations (LIFFO) Inc. president, Edgar Sison, 60% of the town’s tributaries have dried up resulting in low production.

To help mitigate the situation, LIFFO organized its First General Assembly last February 27 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center.

The assembly’s agenda included discussions on how to counter effects of El Niño and government assistance.

He said compared to others, his sector received the least assistance from government.

The group’s priority request to the provincial government and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) is the provision for water pumps to help in water management.

Meanwhile, BFAR provincial fishery officer Glicerio Legaspi said consultative meetings are being conducted to plan for the dredging of rivers while illegal fishing activities in Pangasinan are being monitored.

“We have patrol boats going around the provincial waters- West Philippine Sea and Lingayen Gulf- guarding against illegal fishing,” he said.

He added that the agency’s priority programs to aid the fisherfolk include

the National Shellfish Program, provision of fishery gears and paraphernalia, techno-demo projects, GAD- livelihood program, and Mangrove Enhancement
