MANGALDAN PINDANG FESTIVAL

MANGALDAN— The Gay Association of Mangaldan (GAM) organized a fun- triathlon competition for its members on its “Rainbow Day” on March 7 as part of the town’s annual Pindang Festival.

Christian Castillo, president of GAM said the activity was organized to be more challenging for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community this year by conducting a triathlon.

“The participants raced with pedicabs, which is a popular mode of transportation in the town, and the final dash to the finish line was done through a sack- race”, said Castillo.

The winners were: Rochelle, Ruby, Judy Ann, Nelo, Aya and Joana.

The “Rainbow Day” has been part of festival since it was launched in 2013, featured by magazine programs of big television networks in the country for its unique and fun competitions.

“Our earlier competition was running with costumes in high-heeled shoes then last year, they wore wedding gowns”, said Castillo.

Meanwhile, the members of GAM do not only give entertainment during occasions but are also tapped for worthy causes.

“We also partner with the local government or even private sectors in giving free haircut.” he said.

GAM already partnered with the Mangaldan Police Station (MPS) in giving free haircut in far-flung barangays of the town.

“We are glad that we are recognized in our community”, said Castillo although he admitted there are still bullies who discriminate and mock them.

“We just let them be, we are already used to it, but we are hoping they would change and respect us because after all we have proven to be productive members of the community”, said Castillo. (Hilda Austria)
