Cement shortage delays gov’t projects

LINGAYEN- First the bad news – the province is experiencing cement shortage. The good news? The shortage is caused by high demand brought about by a boom in construction activities.

District Engineer Rodolfo Dion of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said a delay in the completion of projects is seen after contractors continue to complain about shortage of cement supply in the market.

He said the contractors began feeling the shortage since January, being able to secure only 30 bags out of 200 bags ordered.

Dion said among those affected by the shortage are the ongoing construction of a two-storey classroom building in San Jacinto town and the Padilla Bridge in Lingayen even as he pointed out that government projects in other provinces are also affected.

Dion noted that families awaiting the completion of their houses are also affected.

Officials of the Northern Cement Corporation in Sison town and Holcim Cement told Dion that they are unable to cope with the unusual high demand for cement, and the supply problem will likely extend till May.

Cement price per bag in the province increased from P235 to P252, Dion said. (Tita Roces)
