ALTHOUGH Region 1 has seaports and airports, there is no indication of any threat of Zika virus reaching the region but residents are advised to keep their surroundings clean to prevent breeding of mosquitoes in their surroundings.

Dr. Myrna Cabotaje categorically told local newsmen during the KBP Forum, there is no threat of Zika virus in the region.

But she added the government is on high alert for aedis aegypti mosquito-borne deadly Zika virus considered the most serious threat to public health since Ebola nearly decimated eastern Africa in 2014.

She assured that there are quarantine measures already adopted by doctors from the Bureau of Human Quarantine in seaports and airports to monitor arrival of passengers to ensure protection of public health.

She said there was one case reported in 2012, a 15- year old child in Cebu but since then, no other case was reported.

“What is most important is cleanliness of surroundings to stop breeding of mosquitoes,” she said.

She said Zika disease is common in tropical areas. (Tita Roces)
