Celebrating with Binmaleynians during their Sigay Festival

COJUANGCO UPDATES

THE ‘M and M’ tandem of former Fifth District Rep. Mark Cojuangco and Calasiao Mayor Mark Roy Macanlalay joined jubilant Binmaleynians on Jan. 30 for their annual Sigay Festival.

Cojuangco and Macanlalay, with former board member Von Mark Mendoza who is making a comeback in the May 9 polls, were all praises for the unity of the townspeople in celebrating their bountiful fish harvest that makes Binmaley the undisputed Fishbowl of Pangasinan.

Cojuangco, who feels at home with the people, did the grilling himself of the bangus and tilapia popularly grown here. But Cojuangco made a big surprise.

He asked his staff to give him plastic bag that he used to arrange pieces of charcoal briquettes placed in grilling pad. He refused to use kerosene to burn the charcoal briquettes, saying it’s not environment and health-friendly and instead requested his staff to buy cooking oil and look for newspapers and match to set on fire the charcoal and produce ember.

He wowed the people observing him when indeed there was glowing ember that immediately spread to other charcoal briquettes. Cojuangco then asked for a fan, a piece of carton torn from a box that contained kitchen utensils for the grilling. He patiently and continuously fanned the ember that amazed observers because of the fire produced therein, faster than the one in a nearby grilling pad that used kerosene.

Cojuangco then next put the ready-to-grill bangus and tilapia on the grilling pad using his bare hands.

While grilling, the three-term congressman who is eyeing the gubernatorial post with Macanlalay as his tandem, was then joined by Mayor Simplicio “Sammy” Rosario, Macanlalay and Mendoza in the grilling.

Cojuangco didn’t mind if his hands would be dirty or get burned while grilling. He enjoyed what he was doing.

They then partook of the grilled bangus and tilapia, and like the rest of thousands of Binmaleynians who came and trooped to the Sigay Festival, they enjoyed the celebration of fish harvesting, grilling, dining, merrymaking, singing and dancing provided by live bands with fireworks display.
