CHRISTMAS IN JANUARY

IT was like Christmas at the start of the year for 120 children of barangays Lomboy and Mamalingling in Dagupan City when the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1 distributed gifts last January 8.

Regional Director Grace Ursua led the giving of gift packages which consisted of educational supplies, food and t-shirts.  She was joined by Central Pangasinan Field Office Head Engracio Bailon, Technical Services Support Division Head Honorina Baga, Dagupan City Social Welfare and Development Officer Lea Aquino, Lomboy Punong Barangay Arsenio Santillan, Mamalingling Punong Barangay Sonny Tuates and some regional and CPFO staff.

The activity was part of the agency’s Project Angel Tree (PAT) which aims to discourage child labor.

She said children identified to be vulnerable, at risk or engaged in child labor are the target beneficiaries of the project.

“We are happy that child labor, especially the worst forms, is not prevalent in this region. However, we recognize that poverty is still the underlying reason for its existence. Our efforts at the DOLE-1 are geared towards preventing its occurrence,” she said. (DOLE/ASV)
