LINGAYEN —The Pangasinan State University (PSU) vehemently denied the allegation that the books sold to students were overpriced even as he defended the mandatory wearing of uniforms by freshmen.

Dr. Dexter Buted, president of PSU, speaking during an open forum with the students, parents and faculty, said the claims that the prices of books sold by the school are high as posted in the social media are untrue.

Buted showed the comparison of book prices from last school year to the present to illustrate that some of the prices have not changed while others were priced lower.

He explained the move to sell the books is part of solutions adopted to address the complaints about overpriced photocopied hand-outs by some teachers.

Buted also clarified that the policy of selling of books and mandatory uniforms for freshmen students was approved by the students and parents. He recalled the students’ complaint about having the same uniform as other schools and even some business establishments and this led to the proposal to adopt a PSU uniform.

“The new uniform is patented with watermarks and the material is from Thailand so that we will not have the same fabric as that of the others but rest assured that the pricing has an approved budget contract which underwent the bidding process”, said Buted.

He added that the new rules being implemented in the university are necessary for the attainment of its goal to sustain the other courses offered by the school and to compete in the upcoming Association of East Asian Nation (ASEAN) integration.

Buted revealed that some who took the courses offered by the university failed in the recent licensure examinations.

He asserted that the books are not only affordable but are useful for their review and will help increase their chances of passing their licensure exams and make PSU as among the leading state universities in the country.

“When PSU becomes one of the leading universities, there will be additional benefits especially in the funding and these will return to the students, in terms of additional and improved services and facilities by the school,” he said. (Hilda Austria)
