7th GATE open chess tourney ends Dec. 21

LINGAYEN— The 7th Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. (GATE) Cup Open chess tournament kicked off on December 19 at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center here.

The tournament, the final activity of the 2015 Pangasinan Chess Festival (PCF), will run until Dec. 21.

Prizes up for grabs are: Open category – P25,000, first place; P20,000, second; P15,000, third; P10,000, fourth; P8,000, fifth; P5,000, sixth to 10th; P3,000, 11th to 15th; P2,000, 16th to 20th; and P1,000 for the 21st to 25th.

Kiddie category (born on January 1, 2001 or later) – P5,000, first place; P3,000, second; P2,000, third; P1,000, fourth; P750, fifth; and P600 for the sixth to 10th.

Category prizes will also be given to the top local player (P1,000), top female player (P1,000), top senior player (P1,000), top kiddie scorer (P500), and youngest player (P500).

The 7th GATE Cup sponsored by the provincial government in partnership with the Pangasinan Chess League is sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

Other component PCF competitions held previously were the 5th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Champion last Oct. 10-11 and the 5th Pangasinan Chess Championship last Nov. 7-8.

Last September, a chess clinic, also sponsored by the provincial government, was conducted as a preparation to the chess tournaments.
