LINGAYEN— The aquaculture production in the province of Pangasinan is now at the advanced stage, producing 87.7 % from the province’s fish ponds and cages, and only 12.3 percent from the capture fishery.

This was confirmed by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 director, Nestor Domenden when he presented the Gawad Pasasalamat sa mga Kabalikat sa Pangisdaan 2015 award to the provincial government on November 9.

He acknowledged that the province was able to reverse its production in 1999 when the share from capture fisheries was as high as 37%.

Domenden cited the intensified program of the provincial and national government for the expansion of production areas by the cleaning and clearing the river systems.

“Pangasinan is truly number 1 especially in the fisheries sector. It is one of the top provinces in the country in regard the increase of fish production,” he remarked.

However, Domenden reminded that challenges to further expand and maintain key production areas as in Anda, Bolinao, Alaminos City, and Bani and the promotion of the use of quality stocking materials are still present.

Kung mapatigil ang hindi sustainable ways of fishing, mas malaki ang maiaambag ng Pangasinan sa ating food production and food sufficiency program,” he added.

He assured the BFAR’s support to the province, citing a more than twice increase in their next budget.
Domenden also disclosed that the province will host the first national Bangus Congress in January next year. (Johanne Macob)
