MANGALDAN—The town’s local government here reactivated its pest scouts or pest volunteer brigade to monitor existing pests present in the 364 hectares corn plantation in time for planting season.

Daisy dela Cruz, agriculture extension worker said farmers have to be alert against the ‘green soldier bug’ that attacks cornfields in the province.

The most common pest in the town is the corn plant hopper.
“We want to be accurate with the data hence the need for cooperators to monitor for us to be ready in preparing the needed approach especially that we use biological approach and not pesticides, chemical- based approaches are our last resort”, said Dela Cruz.

Mangaldan produces 5 to 6 tons of white and yellow corn per hectare.
Dela Cruz was awarded recently for National Corn Quality Award Agriculture Extension Worker Category last October.
Meanwhile, the National Corn Quality Award for city category this year was awarded to San Carlos City, now a hall of famer, Binalonan for town category and Ilocos Sur for province category. (Hilda Austria)
