DGUPAN City Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo said he hopes his resolution that seeks to provide free cremation services for the departed poor and the establishment of a public crematorium will be implemented soon.

Councilor Tamayo, a lawyer, told The PUNCH that he recently handled a case of two families that were to have a legal fight over ownership of the remains of their dead patriarch.

“It was full of drama. This could have been avoided if the body of their dead had already been cremated.

Tamayo said in his resolution passed two years ago yet that economic realities have outpaced the cost of living in the country.

He said families spend from P10,000 to P20,000 on basic funeral expenses such as coffins and burial place and overpopulated public and expensive private cemeteries hinder families from properly sending off their departed.

He added that cremation is an option that more and more Filipinos are starting to opt for and even gaining religious and cultural acceptability because this eliminates the need for a cemetery plot, burial vault, grave marker and embalming.

“The provision of free cremation services for deceased indigent Dagupeños and members of his family and the establishment of a public crematorium is now and important and indispensable public service,” Tamayo said. (Tita Roces)
