Dagupan fiesta preparations now in full swing

PREPARATIONS are now in full swing for the month-long city fiesta celebration with the theme “Happy City Fiesta, Happy Family” which will officially kick off on December 4 with Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo as this year’s hermano mayor.

Mayor Belen Fernandez invited Dagupenos overseas to come home to their beloved city during the city fiesta which will also coincides with the yuletide season as the festivities will continue till December 30, marking the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine national hero and the pride of the Malay race.   

The Dagupan City fiesta will be held in honor St. John the Evangelist, patron saint of Dagupan and of fishermen. John was darning his net when Jesus called him and his brother James to join him as among his apostles.

The city fiesta will kick off with the 1st Aliwan sa Balon Dagupan Street Dancing Competition and Parade on December 4, when Dagupenos will again demonstrate their street dancing savvy that made them champions twice in a raw in the Dagupan Bangus Festival’s featured “Festivals of the North”.

The Search for Miss Balon Dagupan is ongoing with the screening of contestants already held last Nov. 7. The Miss Balon Dagupan, together with her royal court will be crowned on Dec. 26.

There will also be Belen-Making contest citywide with the best nativity scene to be awarded cash prizes during the fiesta’s barangay night. Mayor Fernandez called barangay captains to a meeting in the afternoon of Nov. 3 to be informed of the mechanics of the contest.

One of the criteria for the contest is the requirement that the nativity scene be made of indigenous materials in Dagupan City.

Meanwhile, the food strip and baratillo (street bazar), permanent fixtures of the city fiesta, are set to open on Nov. 14 along Zamora, Galvan and part of Jovellanos street as a sort of fund raising activity.

The lighting of giant Christmas tree in front of the city museum is set on Dec. 5.

Meanwhile, Councilor Tamayo assured that not a single cent from the city coffer will be spent during the city fiesta, saying using people’s money to fund the fiesta is prohibited by law.
