LINGAYEN— A policeman detailed at the San Fabian Police Station and his partner in crime were arrested in the evening of November 17, after they tried to extort money from an amusement center in Barangay Poblacion East, Pugo town in La Union.

According to police reports, SPO1 Romeo Saringan and his accomplice Ramon Mejia, purporting to be members of the Games and Amusement Board, allegedly were asking for protection money from an amusement center employee named Raymond Halnin.

SPO2 Louie Picazo, investigating officer, said Halnin reported the extortion attempt to the Pugo Police Station and a team was sent to arrest the duo on a pre-arranged time.

Saringan presented two fake identification cards: a police ID bearing the fictitious name SPO1 Roberto Bersalona and a driver’s license.

Confiscated from Saringan was one unlicensed caliber .45 with one magazine loaded with six live ammunitions.

Cases for extortion, usurpation, and violation of Republic Act 10951 or the Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunitions were filed against the suspects with the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office in Agoo, La Union.

Saringan and Mejia are residents of Barangay Nibaliw West in San Fabian. (Johanne Macob)
