THE National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) assured the sufficiency on the supply of electricity in the Luzon grid in the next six months despite El Niño phenomenon.
Engr. Jose Arellano, operation and management head of NGCP North Luzon said based from the power outlook recorded by the agency, the supply of electricity in the Luzon grid has more than 2,000 megawatt reserve.

“The power generation is higher than the demand and the peak generation only reaches three to five percent of the total supply which ranges from 200 to 400 megawatt daily”, said Arellano.
Arellano said 15 to 20 percent of the grid’s capacity comes from hydropower such as the San Roque Dam, Angat Dam, Binga Dam and Pantabangan Dam while most of the supply comes from coal power.
He added more private entities are putting up other power plants that will provide additional sources of power. He said NGCP maintains a reserve equivalent to the supplied electricity of the biggest installed unit or plant in order to assure the continuity of supply in the grid.
“We do this so that in case there will be shutdown of plants whether expected or unexpected we will be ready”, said Arellano.

He said the effect of El Niño phenomenon will only affect the grid when the hydropower plants will reach their lowest level. (Hilda Austria)
