Flames torch Topnotch in OT, 91-90

UCAAP INTER-COLLEGIATE BASKETBALL

UNIVERSITY of Pangasinan guard-forward Joe Anthony Jacinto scored a new tournament-high 38 points, including the heroic winning shot underneath, nipping the Philippine Colleges of Science and Technology Topnotch, 91-90, via overtime, in the second round of the Universities Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan Inter-Collegiate Basketball Tournament held at Dr. Salvador T. Duque Field House on September 21.

The Flames, who edged Topnotch, 81-79, in their first encounter, trailed in the first three quarters of the game, 55-60, and already on the verge of defeat in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter when seldom-used Ross Cariazo converted a three-point play 17:65 seconds left to force a five-minute overtime.

Behind by a single point, 89-90, 5:38 seconds left, Flames off-guard Ric Gordovin failed to secure the important two free throws, fortunately, the ball bounced to Jacinto from the ring and converted inside using the board for the winning basket to the cheers of the Flames’ fans.

Flames forward Ardel Valdez contributed 15 while playmakers Rolly Bravo and Japeth Barola had 11 points apiece.

Topnotch center Francis dela Pena had a team-high 19 points while Rhenz Abando and Nacu added 18 and 16, respectively. (Jess Garcia Jr.)
