LINGAYEN —The release of excess water from the San Roque Dam in San Manuel town for nearly 120 hours since August 22 caused by Tyhoon Ineng’s wrath, compounded by monsoon rains resulted in the flooding of more than 1,000 hectares of rice fields in two towns in the province alone.

According to the Assistant Provincial Agriculturist Nestor Batalla, the towns of Mangatarem and Bayambang were the most affected.

This was validated by Mangatarem’s Municipal Agriculturist Benito Jasmin who confirmed that 720 hectares in the town were damaged while Bayambang Municipal Agriculturist Mercedes Peralta said 300 hectares were under water that resulted in P30 million in damages.

“Our estimated yield per hectare is five metric tons, and palay is priced at P20 per kilogram,” explained Peralta.

Meanwhile, Bautista town Mayor Amadeo Espino said that around 50 hectares of rice fields in their municipality were inundated that translated to P1 million in damages.

Mangatarem continues to validate the amount of damage in its area. (Johanne Macob)
