DAGUPAN CITY – Mayor Belen T. Fernandez along with other mayors of Pangasinan signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for the implementation of the Tech4Ed program in their respective localities.

The signing took place during the ICT Multi-Stakeholders Forum on September 18 at Jimmy L. Fernandez Center, CSI Stadia, attended by some 2,000 students, teachers, and city/municipal and barangay officials.

Under the Technology for Economic Development (Tech4ED) program, everybody will have access to information technology which includes not only training but also educational materials as well as for potential entrepreneurs on how to use the technology and even for farmers to improve their livelihood.

“This will help everyone acquire ICT skills to enable them to expand their social economic development until it becomes a cycle and makes the community more progressive,” said Ray Espiritu, spokesperson of the DOST ICT Office.

Part of the program is the provision of free Wi-Fi to nine public schools under the “Juan, Konek!” campaign which will provide the students and teachers free access to Internet for educational purposes.

The nine public schools are the Dagupan City National High School, Carael National High School, East Central Integrated School, Federico N. Ceralde Integrated School, Judge Jose De Venecia Sr. Memorial National High School, Salapingao National High School, Pugaro Integrated School and Bonuan Boquig National High School.

Each of the nine public schools was provided with complete computer sets for their Tech4ED centers by the city during the forum.

“Today the entire city takes one bold step in technology and embraces a future of promise for our schools, our children. We have handpicked the first nine public schools and two public facilities to benefit from this program because this important tool of technology will certainly add more value and enhance the quality of learning of our students,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez said that the Tech4ED program compliments the vision of her Balon Dagupan, wherein the city is now in the final stages of completing a new land use policy that would govern the spatial development of the city for the next 10 years.

“A new growth center shall rise where the opportunities for the growth of technology and information shall thrive. With our Smart Cities initiatives, we hope to be able to make Dagupan one of the country’s next Web City, as a hub of technology and services which shall, in turn, step up more developments and establishment of new enterprise and create more employment for our people,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez was elated that the DOST-ICTO, through Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim and other IT and business processes outsourcing industry leaders chose Dagupan and have committed to help the city in charting its roadmap for the creation of an IT-BPO hub.

Also present during the MOU signing were Mayors Silverio D. Alarcio Jr. of Laoac, Constante Agbayani of San Fabian, Rodrigo Rafael of Natividad, and Kim Amador of Manaoag. (CIO)
