DAGUPAN CITY—Frequent coordination meetings are already being held between and among provincial officials from the Commission on Election (Comelec), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) as they prepare to beef up security preparations for the coming 2016 polls, initially with the filing of candidacies of candidates from Oct. 12-16.

Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor, told The PUNCH adjustment have to be made based on the experiences in 2013.

He said one example is the lack of security personnel or augmentation force in the last elections for the duration of the campaign period and on election day.

He said an evaluation has to be made on preparations in areas deemed “hotspots.”

Comelec has expressed the need to detail additional security in its offices in the last two weeks before the deadline of biometric registration on October 31 in anticipation of overcrowding and during the filing of candidacy of the candidates to prevent any violence that may erupt as a result of heckling by supporters.

P/Senior Superintendent Rolie Saltat, OIC- police director, said the early preparations will avoid a repeat of mistakes in the past.

“Election is nearing so it’s good to prepare early,” Saltat said. (Tita Roces)
