24 schools in Pangasinan join tourism skills fest

LINGAYEN – Nearly 2,000 students from 24 higher learning institutions and technical vocational institutes in the province actively took part in the 2nd Pangasinan Skills Competition spearheaded by the provincial government through the Pangasinan Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO.)

The activity which highlights the Tourism Month celebration was conducted in collaboration with the Technical Education and Skills Development Agency and the Department of Tourism –Region 1.

The students representing the tourism and the hospitality industries displayed their skills in the various categories which included cookery, fruit and vegetable carving, bartending and flairtending, table skirting, napkin folding, table set-up and virtual tour guiding which were held at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) last September 22.

PTCAO chief Maria Luisa A. Elduayan said the competition sought to provide opportunities for our future service providers in the hospitality industry to showcase their talents and improve their skills to make them competitive with the other hospitality industries.

Meanwhile, Department of Tourism Region 1 Director Martin Varela has lauded the efforts of the provincial government in the development of tourism.

Varela is happy to note that Pangasinan province recorded the highest number of arrivals in the region which, according to Elduayan, has reached over 365, 000 last year, based on establishment and accommodation.

Elduayan added that the province has also listed an accumulated number of 2.4 million of local and foreign visitors who visited different tourist destinations in Pangasinan.

Among the several development efforts of the province, Varela said the skills competition is a right step in molding the necessary experience to meet the challenges of the industry.

Vice-Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr. welcomed the participants to the event as he hailed the students comprising the Pangasinense youth for their display of love for the province by proudly singing the Pangasinan Hymn.

The vice governor said the skills competition is also a reflection of the talents of Pangasinan as he expressed belief that in tourism, we are assured of a better future.

Board Member Amado “Pogi” Espino III, on the other hand, told the students that tourism development does not only include skills enhancement in hospitality industries but also the development of our love for our province.

TESDA Regional Director Cenon M. Querubin has also assured TESDA’s support to the government efforts of helping the people acquire proper skills and training and contribute to the enhancement of training standards that will help our workers to become globally competitive as we prepare for the ASEAN integration.

The skills competition was topped by the Philippine College of Science and Technology as the overall champion, which garnered two golds, one in the bartending and flairtending competition and the other in the table skirting competition.

The Senior Tesoro College, STI College, Lyceum Northwestern College, Phinma-University of Pangasinan and Urdaneta City University got one gold each in the other competitions.  /ADV
