ROSALES –Local pupils were treated to a fun day of storytelling to underscore the importance of reading as part of the celebration of the National Children’s Book Reading Day.

Guest story teller Rey Bufi, founder of The Storytelling Project (TSP), journeyed to Pangasinan to reach rural communities, bringing books and teaching aids with him to tell stories to children.

Bufi read two books from Vibal Publishing entitled “Si Kaitlin at ang Game Machine” and “Bob da Blob” before the pupils of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) from Balungao during the book reading activity at SM City in Rosales town.

He incorporated dancing exercises during the storytelling activity to encourage students’ participation. He said that the exercise helps in sustaining the children’s interest – for children only have short attention span.

“Making reading a habit would take some time thus the need for parents to encourage their children to read and start with just five minutes until it becomes a daily routine of every home and children became passion readers,“ Bufi said.

Catherine Garcia, assistant mall manager, said the Children’s Book Reading Day is celebrated in SM Malls every 3rd Tuesday of July in commemoration of the publication of Dr. Jose Rizal’s classic, “Ang Pagong at Ang Matsing” which forms part of the SM Cares Program for Children.
