Potable water will soon flow to Brgy Carael

AFTER decades of being deprived of potable water from the Dagupan City Water District (DCWD), residents of the island barangay of Carael here will be finally served with potable water 24 hours a day.

New underwater pipes are already being constructed from mainland Dagupan across the Calmay River.

Gonzalo Duque, DCWD chairman said, the work on the P4.5 million piping project leading to Barangay Carael that started in April is set for completion in August this year.

He said the project was made possible by the fund allocation of the Dagupan City government through Mayor Belen Fernandez, whom he said is the only chief executive who considered fulfilling the dream of the people of Barangay Carael to be served with potable water.

Dr. Mac Arthur Samson, former DCWD chairman whom Duque succeeded, confirmed that not even former Mayor Benjamin Lim thought of the project for Barangay Carael.

For years, the residents of Barangay Carael were being serviced by a water system put up by the United States Agency for International Development whose pipes have since been rusting and have not been replaced.

“Past mayors of Dagupan one after the other failed to provide potable water to the people of Carael and only Mayor Fernandez was able to respond to this need.” Duque said.

He said the water service will complement what Mayor Fernandez earlier gifted the people of Carael by building the first two-storey building for the Carael Elementary School.

Duque said the city government also plans to extend the same water facility to the island barangay of Pugaro.

“Mayor Fernandez aims to develop the island village of Pugaro as a tourist spot and before this can be realized, she is bringing potable water there first,” he said.

Meanwhile, Duque announced that the new DCWD board decided to restore the rice allowance of officials and employees of the water district. (Leonardo Micua)
