Poe keys on youth sector

DESPITE still being uncommitted about her political plan for the 2016 polls, Senator Grace Poe has laid out what sounded like a campaign platform that centers on the youth sector.

Speaking before thousands of students of Lyceum Northwestern University (LNU) and University of Luzon (UL) in her sentimental visit to province last Wednesday, Ms. Poe said she will fight for youth’s right to paid internship, fast internet connection, and incentives to agriculture graduates and schools.

Ang ating sector na ekonomiya ay malakas sapagkat marami tayong kabataan na nagtratrabaho sa business processing outsourcing sector, pati na rin sa manufacturing,” she said during her consultation with the students.

The 46-year-old senator said, besides the issues on scholarships and employment opportunities, pledged to seek budget allocation for students’ internships in government offices even as she criticized private hospitals that employ medical students without compensation or worse require fees from students for their internship in the hospitals.

She further maintained that the nation “will attain dominance in many other fields” if the internet connect is fast.

“Internet access was declared a basic human right because it is a great equalizer,” she said.

Ms. Poe told the students, internet is not only for their homework and social media needs, but for them to express their opinions on government policies and everyday happenings.

She added that P1.6 billion of the 2015 national budget was allocated to provide free Wi-Fi to the third to sixth class municipalities and urged the students to monitor their towns for the implementation of the program.

Meanwhile, the senator, who is being questioned for her citizenship and residency, said the same issue has been hurled at her father Fernando Poe Jr. and former Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, Jesse Robredo.

Kaya nga kung hindi ka nagnanakaw at hindi ka incompetent, and pinakamadaling issue sa’yo ay legalidad katulad ng citizenship,” she said.

After her consultations with LNU and UL students, the senator proceeded in another youth consultation at the Virgen Milagrosa University Foundation in San Carlos City, her father’s hometown.- Johanne Macob
