NFA set to fortify 400 warehouses

CALASIAO—About 400 warehouses of the National Food Authority (NFA) are being evaluated to ensure these could withstand 350 kilometers per hour wind and intensity 8 earthquake.

NFA Administrator Renan Dalisay told local newsmen here Friday during his warehouses inspection in Pangasinan, market tour and dialogue with employees, that there is a new standard being adopted, the same that were used to rebuild the new warehouses like in Tacloban and Ormoc.

NFA maintains 4 warehouses in Pangasinan.

Dalisay said since most warehouses nationwide had been built from the 70s to 90s, he said he initiated the evaluation of all warehouses to fit the standards being adopted.

Regions 5 and 8 have been identified as priority areas by the Department of Science and Technology for evaluation.

Also prioritized are requests for repairs of different NFA offices that are most vulnerable even to rains.

Meanwhile, Dalisay said if “The Big One” earthquake would hit the country, NFA has enough buffer stock enough to respond to the rice needs of Filipinos that could last up to 25 days. (Tita Roces)
