LINGAYEN—Twenty ambulant vendors recently received free bicycle-carts from the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) for their livelihood.

DOLE Region 1 Director, Grace Ursua, who led the turnover of the ‘negokarts’ in a ceremony held at the Provincial Employment and Services Office (PESO) in Lingayen, said the ‘negokart’ project is joint-effort of the DOLE and the provincial government.

The recipients of the project, existing ambulant vendors around and near the Capitol Compound, were given various trainings by the PESO on entrepreneurship, food preparation hygiene and marketing.

One of the recipients was 75-year-old Rosario Rañola who has been selling packed goods in her ‘bayongs’ to Capitol employees for 20 years now. According to her daughter, Gina, her mother doesn’t want to stop doing her job despite her age and her Alzheimer’s disease.

Dahil sa pagtitinda niya ng ‘nilagang saging’, ‘sopas,’ ‘kakanin,’ at iba pa, naka-graduate kaming lahat na anak niya” she noted.

Gina, then, took it as a responsibility to help out her mother in her small business. They are not only selling snacks, but also started making and offering homemade goods as ‘longganisa’ and ’embutido.’ (Johanne Macob)
