DAGUPAN CITY – Mayor Belen T. Fernandez encouraged the youth of Dagupan to emulate Nike Rise Star Kristine Cayabyab of Barangay Pogo Chico here during the opening of the University and Colleges Athletic Association of Pangasinan called “Jimmy Fernandez Basketball Challenge” at the Dagupan People’s Astrodome.

Secretary Antonio “Bebot” A. Villar Jr., Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) chairman, was the guest of honor and speaker but was represented by DDB Undersecretary Edgar C. Galvante.

Addressing the players, Fernandez disclosed that she wanted to see more of the young rise to become the next sports discoveries, “like we have seen in the person of Kristine”.

Kristine was able to catch the attention of NBA superstar Lebron James during the Nike Rising event held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay. She was the only athlete from Dagupan who took part in that sporting event.

8- CAYABYAB LAY UPBecause of her performance, she was offered scholarship and the chance to study in the United States of America to undergo first class training lesson and become a sports great.

“What we are saying here is that we focus our energies in providing adequate facilities so that there is little or nothing left for athletes to worry about. We shall see the day when these athletes shall harvest medals and trophies for their schools, for their city and for their families,” said Fernandez.

Fernandez assured the youth that the city government will continue to assist them in their quest for greatness by providing them the best and state-of-the- art facilities with extraordinary opportunities for training and exposure so they can give their 100 percent focus and attention in improving and developing themselves for them to excel in their respective sports.

She, however, wants the athletes to equally focus on their education as well.

“Never take for granted a good education. It will free our society from a lot of chains: poverty, corruption and bigotry,” said Fernandez.

The participating schools are AIE, Lyceum Northwestern University, Philippine College of Science and Technology, PIMSAT and University of Pangasinan.

Also present during the ceremony were Dr. Gonzalo T. Duque, Dean Art Tangco of PIMSAT and City Sports Commissioner Nestor Cesar E. Duque. (CIO)
