ALLIES FOREVERMORE

FOURTH District Rep. Gina de Venecia has categorically described as malicious a rumor being peddled in local media that she will run against Mayor Belen Fernandez who’s gunning for a re-election in 2016.

“Can you fight someone whom you consider as your daughter from the very start?” she asked rhetorically. “Belen is like a daughter to me and your Kuya Joe. We stood up together to give Dagupan a better future,” said Rep. De Venecia.

Interviewed by reporters shortly after the State of the City Address (SOCA) of Mayor Fernandez, the congresswoman said those spreading the rumor that she is poised to run against Mayor Fernandez is working on a political agenda that will work against the city.

“For one, who can fight a performer in the person of Mayor Belen who transformed the finances of Dagupan from negative P44 million during the past administration to a city with a big surplus of P55 million in less than two years?” she told the local media.

Mrs. De Venecia reiterated said she is standing by Mayor Fernandez and will continue to partner with her in giving Dagupan its new and modern city hall. She said she will include the initial budget for the construction of a new Dagupan City Hall in the proposed 2016 National Appropriation Act.

She said there is already a budget of P200 million for the construction of the first ever Dagupan Fish Port and Mayor Fernandez simply has to identify the site for it – in the deeper portion of the Pantal or Calmay River.

In her SOCA, Ms. Fernandez acknowledged the help of Congresswoman De Venecia in many projects for Dagupan like the continuous dredging of the Calmay River who with Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas made representations with Highways Secretary Rogelio Singson for DPWH to lend three dredging machines to Dagupan.

Ms. Fernandez said it was Cong. De Venecia who initiated the construction of Gabion-type of river protection in Barangay Pantal as well as in Lasip Chico up to Malued, elevation of some of the city’s major roads and widening of A.B, Fernandez East from Traffic Post No. 1 to Tambac and others.

The mayor also credited Ms. De Venecia the funding for the feeding program for malnourished pre-schoolers and livelihood projects for women of Dagupan. (Leonardo Micua)
