SP seeks deeper probe

LINGAYEN—After the alarm and scare caused nationwide by the durian candy poisoning in Caraga region that sent 2,000 victims to the hospital last week, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan decided to invite government agencies to shed light on the progress of their investigation of the province’s own recent experience that downed 111 children in a public school.

In a privilege speech last week, Second District Board Member Raul Sison warned that the series of reported food poisoning has become alarming and unless the causes of the food poisoning are known, he expressed fears that there will be more incidents in the future.

“There should be no recurrence or repeat of the incidents,” he said.

The laboratory test result based from samples of the chewing gum eaten by the children is yet to be released, said Dr. Jeremy Agerico Rosario, assistant provincial health officer.

Sison also expressed apprehension that Pangasinenses travelling from Caraga region who might be bringing “poisonous” durian candies unwittingly to their friends and relatives as pasalubong.

“The time to address the situation is now,” he added.

Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, Jr., presiding officer, supported Mr. Sison’s concern.

He said the durian candy food poisoning in Caraga region may not be confined in those areas only as it may happen also in Pangasinan and other places.

Mr. Sison said the government owes it to families and teachers of the students of Guelew Integrated School, San Carlos City, the police that probed who the vendors and suppliers of the poisonous candy and other concerned agencies to provide the answers and enlightenment.
