1.7 VOTERS IN PANGASINAN SEEN

IN a bid to step up voters’ registration, the Commission on Elections provincial office signed agreements with big shopping malls in Pangasinan for the registration of voters in their premises.

This was bared by Provincial Elections Supervisor Marino Salas as he revealed that as of April this year, there are now 1.65 million registered voters in Pangasinan.

He said the registration of new voters just turning 18 years old before the May 2016 election could put the number of voters in Pangasinan to 1.7 million.

Speaking at the KBP Forum last week, Salas, however, said that of the 1.65 million registered voters, there are still 120,000 voters that need to submit their biometric data to the poll body.

Voters that need to submit their biometrics are those who registered in 2004 or earlier when biometric registration was not yet in effect.

According to Salas, initially there were 320,000 voters in Pangasinan that needed to comply with the biometric rules but this decreased since the Comelec started the validation of registration in 2014.

“We are now looking for these 120,000, that is why we will soon have registrations inside malls”, said Salas.

He reiterated that those who fail to validate their biometric data will not be allowed to vote in the 2016 polls.

Registration of new voters and biometric validation of the old ones in the master list will end sometime in October, the same month when all candidates for the 2016 polls are required to file their respective certificates of candidacy in preparation for another automated election.  (Leonardo Micua)
