MANGATAREM— After the establishment of a ‘fragrant’ livelihood through its ilang-ilang (cananga odorata) nursery, the town is looking forward to a ‘healthy’ future with the recent establishment of its malunggay (moringa) nursery.

Second District Rep. Leopoldo Bataoil, in his recent visit to the malunggay nursery located in Barangay Bueno last July 9, said the Project Moringa goes “hand-in-hand” with Project Ilang-ilang whose produce will be processed for the extraction of oil for commercial purposes.

Mr. Bataoil said businessman Fred Reyes has expressed interest in investing and putting up distillery operation to extract ilang-ilang and malunggay oils for the production of various products.

“While ilang-ilang oil will be used mainly for fragrance products, moringa oil will be used mainly on health and medicines as food supplements, he said.

The congressman also encouraged residents to plant malunggay in their backyards or in other idle lands, since the plant which can easily be grown, is useful as a natural medicine, a vegetable, and a potential source of additional income.

The solon said trainings and seminar on moringa production will be provided for residents, particularly out-of-school youths in the village.

Both the moringa and the ilang-ilang plantations have been established in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources’s (DENR) National Greening Program.

Meanwhile, since the ilang-ilang project started, according to Bataoil, many people’s organizations in the district have signified intentions on adopting the project in their respective places. (Johanne Macob)
