LINGAYEN—After receiving series of text messages and phone calls from motorists, Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., in an open letter, belied reports that he ordered the closure of Padilla Bridge preventing motorists from using it on June 30.

In the letter distributed to passing motorists in the area, the governor said, “redecking works for the bridge is a project of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region I and not by the provincial government of Pangasinan.”

“Ang katotohanan nito ay unang nakatakdang ipasara ang tulay na ito noong May 25, 2015 ngunit hiniling ko na ipagpaliban muna ang pagpapasara nito upang makadaan pa ang lahat ng uri ng sasakyan at nang hindi makaabala sa ating mga kababayan dahil hindi pa naman sinisimulan ang konstruksiyon nito,” Mr. Espino said.

Now that the bridge redecking works is underway, even the governor himself had to take alternative routes via Domalandan and Labrador on his way to Manila on the same day the bridge was closed to the public.

This was concurred by Loreto de Leon, Office Engineer and Chief Quantity Surveyor of St. Gerald Construction, project contractor who informed the public through an interview that the scrapping of the surface of the bridge was indeed on-going.

“In two weeks, major full-redecking works for the bridge will be done,” De Leon said, as he asked for cooperation and understanding among motorists for the inconvenience caused by the project construction.

“We urge motorists not to cross the bridge, especially at night, for their safety,” De Leon said.

Meanwhile, the DPWH issued a traffic advisory for the public effective until the completion of the project, stating that all types of vehicles bound to Manila, Alaminos City/Bolinao are advised to take Lingayen-Labrador route via Domalandan Road. (PIO)
