MONSOON RAINS AFTERMATH

PANGASINAN suffered minimal damages in agriculture as a result of the floods on account of the two successive typhoons and the prolonged monsoon rains. In fact, the rains were a boon not bane to rice farmers.

There were 233 hectares of newly planted rice estimated at P2.5 million, off-season corn as well as high-value vegetables that were affected while losses in fisheries amounted to P20 million, or total losses were estimated at P22.5 million.

This was reported by Provincial Agriculture Officer Dalisay Moya during the KBP Forum in Dagupan City.

To help recover losses in agriculture, rehab seeds as well as tilapia fingerling are being made available by her office to the affected farmers and fish farmers.

Moya said the provincial government is presently validating the number of farmers who should be given rehab seeds to replace their newly transplanted rice plants that were submerged due to the flood that lingered for several days.

The same will be done for fish farmers whose fish in captivity escaped or had to be prematurely harvested due to the rise of floodwater.

The damages in agriculture were incurred by farmers in Infanta, Bugallon, Calasiao, Mapandan, Sta. Barbara, Mangaldan, Villasis and Urdaneta City, Agno, Mangaldan, Aguilar, Bautista, Pozorrubio, and Sison.

The damages in fisheries were noted in Calasiao and Bayambang as well as in some coastal areas.

Moya said the rehab seeds will be sourced from her office in Sta. Barbara town while the tilapia fingerling will come from the province’s various fishery stations.

She said the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) will be asked to provide milkfish fingerling to some of the affected fish farmers. (Leonardo Micua)
