1,851 graduate from school-on-the-air on goat production

STA. BARBARA— Some 1,851 agricultural extension workers and farmers in Pangasinan graduated from their school-on-the-air (SOA) course at the Agricultural Training Institute –Regional Training Center 1 (ATI-RTC1) here on June 30, 2015.

The recent SOA course or “Sanayang Pangradyo sa Agrikultura” on sustainable goat production with emphasis on organic agriculture ran from March 10 to June 30, 2015 in partnership with concerned local government units and a local radio network.

On-air classes were aired every Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00-6:00 in the morning.

According to ATI-RTC1information officer, Maricel Dacapias, the program was geared at providing information and update goat raisers, organic enthusiasts with the knowledge to start a goat enterprise and organic farming.

“This knowledge will eventually help the farmers achieve and sustain productivity and profitability in organic agriculture and goat raising inventiveness,” she added.

The course participants- 1,129 males and 722 females- were from the 29 towns in the province namely Anda, Alaminos City, Dasol, Mabini, Bugallon, Lingayen, Mangatarem, Bayambang, Calasiao, San Carlos City, Sta. Barbara, San Jacinto, Manaoag, Mangaldan, Laoac, Bautista, Binalonan, Sison, Alcala, Urdaneta City, Pozorrubio, San Manuel, Asingan, Rosales, Sta. Maria, Tayug, Natividad, San Quintin, and Umingan.

Top course achievers were Darwin Solis of Binalonan, Remedios Dingle of Manaoag, and Walter Acosta of San Quintin. They received financial incentive worth P2,500; P2,000; and P1,500, respectively.

Meanwhile, the three towns with the highest number of graduates also received cash incentives worth P10,000; P7,000; and P5,000, respectively. These were Sta. Barbara with 230 graduates, Binalonan with 140, and Sta. Maria with 136.

SOA program is being implemented by the ATI-RTC1 since 2009 to reach out to more farmers without having to ask them to leave their farms, said ATI-RTC1 Director Rogelio Evangelista.

Previous SOA courses were on rice, corn, vegetable, and mango production. (Johanne R. Macob)
