RACHELLE Mercado, 24 years old, has more reasons to smile these days.

First, out of 122 interns deployed in Pangasinan’s 1st and 2nd districts in 2014, she is among the 39 reported to have been retained by their employers.

Second, she never had to be unemployed after graduation because of the Government Internship Program (GIP).

Third, and what she considers the best, is that, she has been retained at the Municipal Agriculture Office of Dasol, Pangasinan after completing her six-month internship in the said office.

An Agriculture graduate specializing in Animal Science, Rachelle sees a big chance at eventually becoming a part of the organic personnel of Dasol’s MAO, as at least three employees are retiring soon.

“I am indeed very grateful to the GIP because through it, I can say I found my niche in public service,” Rachelle said.

The young lady shared how she enjoyed her work at the MAO because she was able to put into practice her earned degree. Her functions included managing sow farrowing, castration of animals, animal vaccination, mangrove reforestation, mapping and monitoring of municipal rice plant areas, among others.

On a regional scale, Rachelle is one of the 142 interns retained by their employers after their internship in 2014.

“Reports continue to come from the field, and we are expecting the data to increase,” Regional Director Grace Ursua said.

Based on reports from the six field offices of the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1, the distribution by province of the retained interns are as follows: Ilocos Norte, 29; Ilocos Sur, 21; La Union, 22 and Pangasinan, 70.

In 2014, the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office 1 disbursed P37,941,755.39  to cover the stipend and insurance coverage of 1,946 interns under the GIP.

The interns were assigned at various local government units and national government agencies.

Aligned with the employment program of the government, the GIP aims to provide poor young workers opportunity to demonstrate their talents and skills in the field of public service with the goal of attracting the best and the brightest to pursue a career in government service, particularly in the fields and disciplines related to labor and employment.

“Congratulations to those who were given the chance to further utilize their capabilities in serving people, as well as LGUs and agencies which participated in order to realize the objectives of the GIP,” Director Ursua said.

The Regional Director bared that Region 1’s GIP allocation for 2015 is P19,305,000. (Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez)
