Wild mushrooms down 16 persons
LINGAYEN—The provincial health officer has warned the public not to eat wild mushrooms that suddenly grow in their backyard.
He issued the warning after 16 persons were confined in hospitals in the province due to food poisoning caused by mushrooms they ate with their meals.
Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman said Friday that although the situation had been contained, warning is still up against eating wild mushrooms especially during the rainy season when these grow fast in the backyards.
The victims in Bayambang, Basista and Malasiqui towns were rushed Tuesday to Bayambang District Hospital, Pangasinan Provincial Hospital and Pangasinan Doctors Hospital.
All the victims reportedly plucked the wild mushrooms in their backyards. They experienced abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting after consuming them.
De Guzman said wild mushrooms are poisonous. “Even if cooked or boiled, the toxins will not be removed,” she said.
She said symptoms of food poisoning occur after two hours but if they take longer, the poisoning is worse.
The youngest victim was five years old while the oldest was aged 60. (Tita Roces)
