The success of the dairy farm project is assured

COJUANGCO UPDATES

WHEN former Pangasinan fifth district Rep. Mark Cojuangco envisioned the establishment of dairy farm in Laoac town during his incumbency, his prime concern then was the health of the children.

Cojuangco said the young ones contented themselves by drinking sodas (soft drinks) or other sweet colored drink (so-called palamig in Pangasinan) with no health benefits to them in their schools.

Cojuangco added that his secondary interest was the interest of farmers, that they must have an alternative livelihood.

When farmers commit to plant Cojuangco grass (Puricano hybrid) where one hectare of lot would support the feeding needs of about 10 cows, the farmers would become members of cooperative behind the dairy farms’ operation.

DAIRY-FARM

He said one big concern for the dairy farm is how to source sufficient food for the lactating cows.

Cojuangco said the dairy farm is still awaiting the arrival of the rotary milking parlor they have been waiting for two years now. Its arrival was delayed due to the Supreme Court decision declaring the Priority Development Assistance Fund of congressmen as illegal.

Cojuangco said this milking facility has been funded but it was put on hold. Now that the issues had been settled, the rotary milking parlor is expected to arrive before December.

Once it is in use, it is expected to spur the operations of the dairy farm, he said.

Without this facility, he said it is hard to milk about 400 cows twice a day.

He expressed confidence that the project become self-supporting once the operation is already in full swing.

With this facility and once milk production reaches about 2,500 liters of milk daily, the farm will be generating its own cash flow needs.

Wholesale price of milk per liter now is P60 and with 2,000 liters daily production, it can earn as much as P120,000 daily, he added.

He said the number one key to the advancement of the plant is the rotary milking parlor and once it is installed; the farm’s growth is already assured.

He said it is grossly unfair and premature to conclude the project is a failure because its basic required equipment have not been completed.

“Tell us that we failed if everything is in place and still does not earn,” he said. “But that has not happened yet, “ he pointed out.
