CELEBRATION IN DAGUPAN

MAYOR Belen Fernandez said the proclamation of Philippine Independence should always remind all Filipinos of the country’s inspiring history, the self-less sacrifice of Filipino heroes, and their determination to assert their right to chart the Philippine’s destiny as a nation.

Leading the celebration of the 117th Philippine Independence Day at the Dagupan City Plaza along with City Schools Superintendent Freserfina Bravo, Ms. Fernandez said: “The lessons of history which led to the achievement of our prized liberty should never be lost to our children”.

Former Civil Service Commission Chairman Dr. Francisco Duque III, now president of Lyceum Northwestern University, was the guest of honor and speaker during the celebration that started with flower offering at the foot of the monument of Dr. Jose P. Rizal and capped by the flying of white balloons symbolizing the freedom won.

Duque, who was represented by Dr. Catalino Rivera, LNU vice president, narrated the events in the country, specifically in Bulacan, that led to the revolution that culminated in the proclamation of Philippine Independence in Kawit Cavite on June 12, 1898.

Citing the theme of the celebration “Kalayaan 2015: Tagumpay sa Pagbabago ng Nasimulan, Abot- Kamay na ng Bayan“, Dr. Duque said freedom can be won through reforms, adding that reforms will remove the obstacles to the nation’s progress and development.

In her speech, Mayor Fernandez said: “We all know that President Aquino’s administration agenda has already borne fruits for the last five years and so we must continue to envision an inclusive, just and prosperous Filipino society; and a continued improvement in the quality of life of our people.”

Referring to its status as one of the national finalists in this year’s Search for Best Friendly City, the mayor said the city chooses to free its children from ignorance and secure a better future for them by improving the city’s public schools in partnership with the City Schools Division officials, all school principals and teachers.

“Today, we chose to honor this liberty by making sure that our people are free from diseases, hunger and sufferings by constantly working harder to make sure we have the best medical services available, medications for everyone, including newly born, mothers and would-be mothers, the elderly and the marginalized sector.

Dagupan to date has enrolled more than 15,000 indigents to PhilHealth, which is the reason it was awarded the Agila Award for having the most number of enrollees among all LGUs in Region 1.

“We chose to cherish this freedom by making sure our fishermen and their families continue to work with dignity through livelihood that provides food on the table,” the mayor said.

At the same time, she said that the city is also making sure that the poorest of the society has roofs over their heads through the socialized housing program that provides them real and decent shelters they can rightfully call as their own.

“We honor this liberty by ensuring that the true value of our people’s taxes is never, ever wasted again to corruption,” Fernandez said, adding that in Dagupan, “we chose to honor, enjoy and nurture liberty through good governance.” (Leonardo Micua)
