117th INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

LINGAYEN– “Let us be free from the things that bother us or us being ‘unFilipino.'”

Governor Amado Espino Jr. told the audience that gathered at the Provincial Library where he led the province in joining the rest of the nation in celebrating the 117th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, 2015.

Espino, who called for a practical approach towards independence, underscored the significance of liberating ourselves from want, poverty, fear, criminality, and bad influence about politics.

“Our freedoms should extend itself to liberating our citizens from want, from hunger, poverty and criminality and from the things that bother us and those that make us less of a Filipino. Let us not waste efforts of our forefathers. Let us refrain from politicking that distracts us from our efforts towards genuinely liberating our socio-economic conditions,” he said.

He also urged for the revisiting of good Filipino traditions such that of bayanihan system which showcases cooperation among community members, so as to further achieve true independence

Meanwhile, the program’s guest speaker, Virginia Pasalo, Commissioner of the Pangasinan Historical and Cultural Commission (PHCC), reminded that independence starts from one’s self.

She said, “when you liberate minds, you begin the first step towards liberating yourself, towards mastering your thoughts, your emotions that leads to balancing and finding the equilibrium. It starts always with you, from within.”

“Only then can you can begin liberating and healing our country from its social sickness and unleash its potential for growth,” she stressed. “If you couldn’t even find independence in yourself, how can you find or bring independence to others or to your country,” she added.

“What you do not have, you cannot give away,” she concluded.

The celebration was highlighted by the distribution of two books: Pinablin Dalin, a book on the history, culture and development of Pangasinan and Kurit Panlunggaring, a collection of winning literary pieces written in Pangasinan. The books were distributed by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., and Vice-Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim.Dr. Cecilia B.
