THE ONLY DRUG–FREE TOWN

STO. TOMAS— As the campaign against illegal drugs in the province continues, the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB) has determined that this town is still the one and only town in Pangasinan to be drug-free and decided to honor its officials and residents with an award.

In simple ceremonies Monday, Mayor Timoteo Villar III received a DDB plaque signed by DDB Chairman Antonio Villar Jr. “in grateful acknowledgement of his accomplishment to maintain the municipality of Santo Tomas, Pangasinan as drug-free thereby contributing to the Dangerous Drugs Board vision of a drug-resistant Philippines”.

The mayor acknowledged the legacy left by DDB Chair Villar and his wife Vivien Villar both former mayors of the town, in making their town drug-free throughout the long years of their administration. The incumbent mayor is a nephew of the Villar couple.

“It was a big challenge to me how to maintain this status because this is what makes our town known throughout the province and outside… that drug addicts and pushers have no place here,” he said.

The mayor admitted that the pressure on him to maintain the town’s status as drug-free was stronger because his uncle is the DDB chair who wants the town to be a good example to all other local government units in the country.

The DDB also had a one-day orientation for Barangay Clearing Operations Monday here.

Present at the awarding ceremony were DDB officials Undersecretary Rommel Garcia, Assistant Secretaries Amador Pabustan and Benjamin Reyes, Deputy Executive Directors for Administration and Operations, respectively. (Tita Roces)
