Carael finally has 2-storey school building

AFTER MORE THAN 50 YEARS

FINALLY, after more than 50 years in existence teaching several generations of pupils, Carael Elementary School n Dagupan City has a two-storey classroom it can call its own.

Inaugurated last week, Alma Fernandez, officer-in-charge at the school said the 1,041-pupil population and 32 faculty members rejoiced after they dream to have decent and convenient classrooms was fulfilled.

Fernandez said during the rainy season, the school was perennially flooded and classes had to be suspended. And when the rains stopped, floodwaters were trapped inside classrooms, they spent time clearing the rooms instead of studying.

“Often, students would attend classes with the feet raised to avoid getting any infection in the trapped floodwater inside the rooms.

The situation changed dramatically for the school after Mayor Belen Fernandez visited last year and saw the plight of the pupils. She promised to build a new school building for them.

The construction of the two-storey building, composed of eight classrooms that will be occupied by grades five and six, was funded fully by the city funds, on the direction of Mayor Fernandez.

The school won 1st prize in the 2014 The Outstanding Farmers of the Philippines (TOFARM) -Agri Initiative category sponsored by the Jaycee International Philippines and Universal Harvester Inc.

It has been noted for its best practices among them, teaching pupils to plant vegetables with the help of the community and faculty during their Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan class. Their harvest is used for feeding program for their pupils.

The school also won in the schools division and local government project in the Gulayan sa Paaralan search two years ago. (Tita Roces)
