Unexpected lay-offs in GMA Dagupan

By May 5, 2015Business, News

THE operations of the GMA Network -Dagupan was suddenly pruned last week that led to the termination of some 20 of its regular employees and talents reportedly as part of the management’s decision nationwide to streamline its operations.

The streamlining process reportedly affected reporters, editors, cameramen and production staff of other GMA TV stations in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The biggest victim in local programming was GMA Dagupan’s “Primera Balita” newscast. Its announced last airing last week surprised many of its thousands of regular viewers.

“Primera Balita’s” demise came on the heels of the reported closure of GMA Ilocos in Vigan City, also owing to streamlining.

But GMA Dagupan is not totally shutting off its news as “24 Oras North-Central Luzon” anchored by TJ Torrida and Joyce Segui in the afternoon has been retained.

GMA insiders said the sudden layoffs caught many of the staff unaware that it didn’t even give many a chance to say goodbye to their fans on the air. They could only do so through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

An insider who refused to be identified said while they were given no choice but to accept severance pay of still undetermined amount, they understood that it was a management prerogative to improve performance and hopefully generate more revenues in the area. (Leonardo Micua)
