Start looking for ‘Dagupan Certified’ bangus tag
LOCAL consumers can already be assured that the Dagupan bangus they buy are genuine because of the ‘Dagupan Certified’ tag that the Dagupan City government has began implementing.
“Finally, this is a dream fulfilled for our fisherfolks!” said Mayor Belen T. Fernandez when she led the tagging of Dagupan bangus at the city’s branding center inside the consignacion area in the Magsaysay Market on May 12.
The mayor said she is confident that the tagging will give the city’s main produce an added value since it guarantees households that the bangus was raised and harvested in Dagupan City.
Ms. Fernandez disclosed that the city will soon look for Dagupan bangus wholesale dealers it can authorize to sell tagged Dagupan bangus anywhere in the country.
The tagging scheme has been institutionalized by City Ordinance No. 2028-2015 that established measures for the promotion and advancement of the city’s bangus industry.
City Agriculture Officer Emma J. Molina said Dagupan City is the first local government unit to tag its locally produced bangus.
The tagging is still not mandatory to all bangus growers in the city but Molina believes all the growers in the city will soon join the effort since it will help them sell more.
Molina pointed out that tagging can only be done through accreditation, meaning the city’s bangus growers will have to apply for the privilege and be made to commit to the standards set.
Lourdes Cayabyab, a bangus dealer in the consignacion market since 1975, thanked the city government for the tagging scheme.
“Consumers all over the country always ask for Dagupan bangus because of its distinct taste,” she said. “It is the guarantee they look for,” she added.
Cayabyab is now looking into the possibility of expanding her business by becoming an authorized dealer of Dagupan bangus outside of Dagupan City. (CIO)
