R1AA tail-ender in Palaro

By May 17, 2015News, Sports

FIRST the bad news. The Region 1 Athletic Association (R1AA) was cellar-dweller in the just concluded Palarong Pambansa from May 3 to 9 in Tagum City, Davao del Norte won anew by the National Capital Region (NCR).

But the bit of good news is, it ended as a top contender in the accompanying special games for persons with disabilities (PWDs) called Paralympics and in demonstration sports.

This was bared by Edilberto Abalos, education program supervisor of the Dagupan City schools division who accompanied the 23 Dagupan athletes that formed part of R1AA delegation to the Palarong Pambansa.

In the overall standing for the regular sports, R1AA placed 17th among the 17 regional athletic delegations that competed in the Palaro winning only two gold, four silver and 25 bronze medals.

Of the 25 bronze medals, two were won by two Dagupan swimmers.

In the 2014 Palarong Pambansa, R1AA was 11th in the overall standing, improving from its 13 overall finish in the 2013 national games.

The 2015 Palarong Pambansa again adopted the Olympic system of determining the winner based on the number of gold medals won by delegations. When two or three teams tied, their number of silver medals would be counted and if still they tied, the winner will be finally determined by their bronze harvests.

Caraga, Zamboanga and R1AA actually won two gold medals each but Caraga won seven silver medals against Zamboanga’s six and R1AA’s four. So, Caraga landed 15th in the standing with Zamboanga in 16th place.

The Paralympics for PWDs was won by Western Visayas with 13 gold medals, followed by Southern Tagalog with 12 gold medals, Davao Region with 11 gold medals and R1AA, 10 gold medals.

Cordillera Administrative Region and R1AA earned 5 gold medals each in the demonstration sports like wushu, wrestling, billiards, Sepak Takraw for Girls and 3 on 3 basketball. (Leonardo Micua)
