Pangasinan spared from drought, say

By May 10, 2015Inside News, News

PANGASINAN is lucky, it is not affected by a severe drought brought about by the intensified El Niño phenomenon as much as its neighbors.

This was bared by Rosendo So, chairman of partylist Abono, who said during KBP Forum that farmers in Pangasinan are better off than their counterparts in other provinces and are still planting.

He said because of the looming water crisis on account of El Niño, Pangasinan farmers are not planting rice but corn which requires little water to grow.

He is optimistic that even a prolonged El Niño will not result in rice shortage as the rice harvests during the last planting season are still intact and the government has began importing rice in anticipation of a short rainy season.

So also noted that it has began raining sporadically in some parts of the province, which is good for the plants and adding to the water reserves of the province.

He said more rice are being produced by farmers today as a result of the crackdown against rice smuggling.

Abono earlier joined hands with the Bureau of Customs in its drive to stop the smuggling of pork from other countries and when smuggling stopped, the production from the hog industry began to increase.

So also believes that despite the minimal drought, there is plenty of poultry products available in Pangasinan. (Leonardo Micua)
