More women reported rape this year

LINGAYEN—Wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, beware. Rape cases in Pangasinan have increased by 48 percent this year.

This was the terse reply of P/Sr. Supt. Belli Tamayo, the new officer-in-charge police provincial director to the query of Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr.’ during last Monday’s Question Hour of the Sanggunian Panlalawigan’s regular session on peace and order situation of the province, and his plans and programs.

Tamayo said these are not mere instances of violence against women cases but rape. “It’s really increasing,” he added but he could not provide more details specifically about incestuous rape.

He, however, assured the provincial board that he will get more data about the rape cases.

He said each police station has its women’s and children’s protection desks manned by trained policewomen to attend to the cases.

From January to April this year, Tamayo said about 82 rape incidents had been reported to various police stations across the province compared to only 50 cases over the same period last year.

“We just don’t know if it’s because they (victims) are braver this time in reporting the crime,” he said. –Tita Roces
