Int’l AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day held

DOCTORS and staff of the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) led the observance of the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Day on May 14, 2015 in this city.

The candlelight activity, being held worldwide, apart from promoting awareness on HIV-AIDS is a way to remember the people who died from the disease, said Dr. Rico Reyes, head of the R1MC obstetrics-gynecology department of their activity.

According to the Philippine National AIDS Council, HIV is a retrovirus that causes HIV infection that lowers the immunity (body defense system) or the ability to fight off disease.

AIDS, on the other hand, is a condition characterized by a combination of signs and symptoms, caused by HIV contracted from another which attacks and weakens the body’s immune system, making the afflicted individual susceptible to other life threatening infection.”

The virus is transmitted through body fluids namely blood, semen, vaginal or cervical fluids, and breast milk. (Johanne Macob)
