THE opening of the proposed Corazon C. Aquino Cancer Center at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) in Dagupan City is definitely set early next year, 2016.

According to Dr. Roland Joseph O. Mejia, R1MC director, the cancer center project approved during then DOH Secretary Francisco T. Duque’s term, aims to decongest Metro Manila hospitals of cancer patients from provinces north of Manila.

The budget for the establishment of the center is already included in the General Appropriations Act of 2016, he said.

Named after former President Corazon C. Aquino, a victim of cancer herself at age 79, government said it hopes to open the center during her son, President Benigno S. Aquino III’s term.

The R1MC recently opened its modern kidney center which has already performed successfully 10 kidney transplants since 2012.

The recently inaugurated Drug Rehab Center under Director Delfin Gubatan has also already admitted 62 patients, it was learned.

Last Feb. 6, the R1MC staff feted a Canada-based medical group led by a Pangasinan and Pampanga native, nurse Shirley Quinto Pinlac, for holding a 2-week medical treatment and consultation at the hospital, treatment for more than a hundred patients, including terminal ones.

The group is planning to hold another mission here next year, it was learned.
