Bangus Festival wins ‘Festivals of the North’

DAGUPAN Bangus Festival’s champion street dancers, represented by Barangay Pantal, dominated anew the ‘Festivals of the North’ held in the streets of Dagupan and the city plaza on April 26.

The back-to-champion danced away with the grand prize of P400,000 and more for winning all major awards, repeating their award-winning performance they registered last year.

Scoring an average score of 89.17 percent, Bangus Festival bested 11 other festival delegations during the presentation at the city plaza.

The street dancing, witnessed by thousands that lined up A, B. Fernandez Avenue, Burgos Extension, Perez Boulevard and M. H. del Pilar Street comprised 30 percent of the score while the main presentation at the city plaza was worth 70 percent.

For topping in the street-dancing event, Bangus Festival bagged a separate special prize of P20,000 aside from having been adjudged as Best in Props for which it won another P10,000.

Bangus Festival’s entry, Ms. Sarah Gabrillo, has won the title Festival of the North Queen. Joyce Beravera of the Hundred Islands Festival of Alaminos City won second place.

Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez, honorary chairperson of the Dagupan Bangus Festival, handed the cash prizes to all the winners.

First runner-up was the Mango Festival of Masinloc, Zambales and received the second-highest prize of P200,000, and the special award of  P8,000 as second best in props.

The Halamanan Festival of Guiguinto, Bulacan was second runner-up and brought home P80,000. Its entry, Florence Paraiso, bagged P5,000 for being Best in Costume and another P5,000 as third best overall as Festival of the North Queen.

Laoag City’s Pamulinawen Festival was third runner-up and received P60,000 cash.

The Abel Iloco of Cauayan, Ilocos Sur was fourth runner-up and was good for P50,000.

Newcomer Sacuting Festival of Dolores, Abra won P20,000 after being adjudged Best in Costume among all competing delegations.

The other delegations that joined this year’s ‘Festivals of the North’ were Goat Festival of Balungao, Pangasinan, Corn Festival of Sto. Tomas, Pangasinan, Ani Festival of Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Mango and Bamboo Festival of San Carlos City and Daing Festival of Sto. Tomas, La Union.

Special performance was made by Tribu Catbalaoagan who performed the street dance in the Manaragat Festival of Catbalogan, Samar, a day after they won in the Aliwan Festival 2015 in Manila. (Leonardo Micua)
