FIFTEEN families were rendered homeless in a less than an hour fire that razed 11 residential houses starting at 2:30 p.m. of May 4 along Amado Street in Barangay Tapuac in the first major fire in Dagupan City this year.

Fire Officer 4 Charmy Ocampo, Dagupan City’s Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) operations officer, said no person was hurt in the blaze that was fanned by strong mid-afternoon winds.

The blaze that spread to eight other houses made of light materials gobbled up properties estimated at P100, 000, was put under control by combined firefighters from the Dagupan BFP, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) and the Panda Volunteer Firefighting Brigade.

Ocampo said investigation is still going on to determine the cause of the blaze even as he had pinpointed the house of one Valentino Flores where the fire started.

The other owners of the house razed to the ground were Violeta Flores, Ariel Flores, Cristina Flores, Jude Flores, Oliver Ramos, Rolando Formoso, Alejandra Formoso, Andrea Formoso, Leslie Garcia and Reagan Flores.

A resident said neighbors were playing bingo nearby when the fire broke out.

All the displaced families are now temporarily sheltered on tents beside a cemented basketball court in the village where they were assisted by the city social welfare office with used clothing and food.

Ocampo confirmed the blaze was the first major fire that occurred in Dagupan City since the start of the year, adding that all the rest of fires recorded were grass fires numbering 74 which did not damage any property though.

Records of the Dagupan BFP showed there were 26 grass fires in January 19 in February, 12 in March.
