THE designated 64 barangay desk officers for Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC)  completed a half-day training course on the law protecting women and children, Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act, last week.

Gender and Development center chief Marrien Mejia said the participants were also given an overview on the concept of gender and development to prepare them in handling complaints and the victims.

“The desk officers are now ready to handle cases of abuses against women and children in their respective barangays,” Mejia said.

Early this month, the city launched the VAWC Hotline 0947-50-88888.

“I have allotted P6 million fund for the construction of the first Women Center in the city in addition to the programs that we have already started including the VAWC hotline so that there will be a place that women who are victims of violence can go to address their concerns,” said Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

Recently, the city organized the Samahan ng Kababaihan sa Dagupan (SAKADA) to help and assist the city in preparing a budget to address the needs of women in the barangays, particularly livelihood opportunities for stay-home mothers. (CIO)
