Fun time, alert time

TOWNS and cities in Pangasinan have already began experiencing a steady flow of visitors particularly in resort areas and popular tourist destinations during weekends. With the usual planned fun activities of residents and visitors alike, they tend to be carefree and reckless and these result in accidents, whether on the road, by the beach or during drinking sprees.

These usual occurrences are expected and, therefore, it behooves upon local government units and the police to even be more alert and better prepared with contingencies.

The first basic measure that must be in place during summer vacation for students is for our town police to increase visibility in poblacion areas for stricter enforcement of traffic rules and ordinances. Second is for our local governments to deploy trained lifeguards along their coastlines. Third, our hospitals must be prepared to respond to drowning and food poisoning accidents.

The presence of uniformed police and lifeguards in crowded beaches and resort areas are effective reminders to hosts and visitors that accidents should be avoided. At the same time, would be bullies, thieves, opportunists, etc. can be deterred from operating in these areas.

Let’s all help make Pangasinan the best vacation and tourism destination yet in the region by being safety conscious and friendly hosts.

Our own fight

NOT only is history on our side in the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight on May 3 (Philippine time) in Las Vegas, Nevada.  With his $80-million purse, Pacquiao becomes the richest Filipino athlete of all time.

In this bout called The Fight of The Century, the multi-awarded Pacquiao is aiming yet for two world records. 1)  A win will make him the solo owner of the three world welterweight titles (147 lb); presently, he owns one against Mayweather’s two.  2) A win will make him the first to defeat the unbeaten Mayweather (47-0).  Because Pacquiao has long been our national treasure owing mainly to his undisputed world mark of having won eight world crowns in eight weight divisions, his every fight has become our own fight, the nation’s fight.

He wins, we all win.  He loses, we all lose.  We laugh, celebrate, with him.  We cry, commiserate, with him.

For Pacquiao, the world is his stage.  The Filipino is worth rooting for.
